He came in to wipe the slate clean, from corruption, bent cops.
And he'd come from a military background in India, and he was gonna sort everything out and he did.
And he was strict.
And gradually over the years we've seen little moments, where he's started to despair at change.
And we get to this latest point where he's lamenting, the fact that he can't tidy up all the loose ends, before he leaves.
I've decided the time is due, perhaps long overdue, for me to retire.
And I think he senses his own sell-by date.
If possible, I'd like to see my men into safe harbor.
You, Strange, young Morse.
Thus, I fear I should feel I'd left a job only half done.
Now we are seeing the sort of fruition, of his emotional journey with the passing of his wife.
As suffering does to us all.
It makes us look again at what we've taken for granted.
India has a very special place in Bright's life.
It's where he met his wife.
He loved the culture, he loved the people.
Perhaps most poignantly, it's where his little daughter was born and died young.
(phone ringing) But also it's somewhere he has a friend, who runs a children's school.
There's that possibility somewhere he could go, and actually be of use.
- I'm off.
- You certainly see a softening of the man, him attempting to sort of meet Endeavour where he is.
Your tour of the west country proved restorative I hope?
- Yes sir, thank you.
- Suddenly there's his whole new life unfolding and part of that is build bridges, and make amends and see that people are okay.
Well, carry on.
Days of change are upon us Morse, endings and beginnings.
This poetic aspect of a man we never expected.
He has a great affection for him.
It's been an honor and the greatest privilege, of my service to have spent these last years with you.
Working with these people.
- Like wise, sir.
- Sharing the Endeavour, to produce, give of our best to something that demands you, come up to it.
Carry on.
This, the level has always been the highest for me, and has always challenged me to try and find, a way to be where it is.
Yeah, very lucky.
I just feel very privileged to have been part of it.
